The life of any creative type has its ups and downs. Once in awhile, keeping one's ego in check can be a bit of a challenge. That's what this song's about.
This is one of those songs that the original Imaginary Lovers (Félix, Sebastien and Tommy) fell into immediately. I played them the song on my acoustic guitar and by the second verse, everybody was locked into the groove. Listen to the rhythm section of Sebastien and Tommy - so tight. And how about Félix with his incredible lead guitar hook?
Ryan Gazzola, one of my favorite singer-songwriters, provides anchoring harmonies on the chorus and multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Steve Comtois plays the mandolin, adding a certain folk and bluegrass quality to this otherwise rocking tune.
lyrics
When to Walk Away (Comeau)
I see your smiling faces
When I walk through that door
I come from miles away
They say you can hear it in my voice
I've been known to have a temper
When some of you fools just disagree
Yeah, I've got a bone to pick
If you don't like it you can kiss my ass
I really wasn't planning on this
But this really pisses me off
Gonna put up my fists and show you no mercy
Gonna say things I should never have said
Then I'll realize just what I've done
Fall to my knees and beg for forgiveness
One day I'll learn...
When it's time to walk away
I think some of you are too sensitive
Take yourselves a little too seriously
I'll have you know I've paid my dues
Don't you dare tell me what's right and what's wrong
Gonna make something of myself
When my ship comes in
You... you're just a pawn in their game
You've been paying all your life and you will forever
I really wasn't planning on this
But this shit really pisses me off
Gonna put up my fists and show you no mercy
Gonna say things I should never have said
Then I'll realize just what I've done
Fall to my knees and beg for forgiveness
One day I'll learn...
When it's time to walk away
When it's time to walk away
Oh, when it's time to walk away
I've been known to have a temper
When some of you fools just disagree
Yeah, I've got a bone to pick
If you don't like it you can kiss my ass
