We all want to fit in. We all want to feel like we're where we belong. We all want to feel accepted and loved by those who surround us. This is what this song is about.
For years I'd played around with the title "Just one of the boys" and written different sets of lyrics to express this universal need to feel part of the gang. I wanted simple words that illustrated this need for a connection.
Félix came up with the music which I'd told him should be danceable - what? A dance song on a Max Comeau record? Indeed, I wanted the spirit of Niles Rodgers to inhabit this song. Félix delievered the goods. Right from the firs bars of the intro, I knew this song was pure fire. His guitar solo here is one of the best he's ever come up with. Such a pleasure collaborating with this guy.
Check out the drums (Tommy Routhier) bass (special guest Tom Tartarin) and percussions (Elli Miller Maboungou) in that middle section. And what can be said about the gospel stylings of Magella Skerritt, Lauriel Lewis and Clerel Djamen? They lift the song up to the heavens.
And remember boys (and girls!) ... love's not a game for the weak of heart!
lyrics
Just One of the Boys (Music by: Félix Tellier-Pouliot / Lyrics by: Max Comeau)
Just one of the boys
I'm just like you, you're just like me
Just one of the boys
Something I try very hard to make you see
Just one of the boys
We share the same ambition, the very same dreams
Just one of the boys
But everything about me's not quite as it seems
Oh, I oughta know by now
Love's not a game for the weak of heart
Oh, and that's alright!
Just one of the boys
Living my life like a chameleon
Just one of the boys
You've seen me do it I turn it off, I turn it on
Just one of the boys
Walk a thin line between chaos and control
Just one of the boys
One minute I'm down, the next I'm on a roll
Oh, I oughta know by now
Love's not a game for the weak of heart
Oh, and that's alright!
Oh, I oughta know by now
Love's not a game for the weak of heart
Oh, and that's alright!
Oh, I really oughta know by now
But I won't stop 'til I get what I want
Yeah, yeah and that's alright
Just one of the boys
Tonight I chase the elusive dream
Just one of the boys
Watch me turn this heartbreak into gold
Just one of the boys
I think by now that everybody knows
Just one of the boys
Yeah...
