about

Max says:

"Black Sheep was written shortly after the release of my 2017 album, "Rock, Paper, Scissors". Christmas was coming and I felt I needed someone to save me, someone to help me through that year's holidays. I imagined a fictional boyfriend or girlfriend waking with me on Christmas Eve or something and encouraging me to face the day and head off to the family reunion or whatever.

Deep down I just think the song is me waving my freak flag and saying: 'hey, I'm a black sheep and that's just the way I like it but... also, I wish I was as cool, calm and collected as you all seem to be. Why can't I be more like you? Why am I such a mess? Why do I need to be the black sheep?'

I remember bringing it to the then Imaginary Lovers band and everyone just naturally falling into place and jamming the hell out of it. We stuck to that arrangement, pretty much, with Julian and Julien playing every single instrument and me singing and... I guess I played my Breedlove acoustic guitar on this, too! I love this track! It's so... me!"
