Following a rather discouraging argument with an old flame, via texting, I decided some of the words texted would make perfect song lyrics. Specifically, the line “I don’t have time for this” and “keep it up and I’ll ignore you” felt like a gift from the muse. I immediately rushed to my acoustic guitar and started pacing my apartment, strumming a G-chord, singing lines at random. The second I hit upon: “I can’t break this chain anymore than I can stop the rain”, I knew I was going somewhere. Indeed, some loves are hard to let go and at times, it seems inevitable that we will keep coming back for more. The chorus was really all I wanted to tell this old friend of mine: “Hear me out, I’m not asking for much, just a little piece of you.”
I associate this song to Montreal’s Mariposa Café as it was the first song I ever performed there during one of their famous Open Mic nights. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive and Victor, who plays gorgeous lead guitar on this recording, called me into the kitchen where he immediately offered me a headlining gig at the café. I was lucky enough to get fellow Fleetwood Mac fan and accomplished member of Ladies of the Canyon, Jasmine Bleile, to sing harmonies with me in full Mac mode. Oh, and I have to mention this as well: Matt Legroulx who plays both bass and drums was the first musician we recorded for this album and, like a pro, he came in, played his parts – perfectly – and was done in less than an hour. I remember thinking: man, if every track is done so fast – we’ll end up with a double album in a month!
lyrics
YOU (Comeau)
I can't break this chain
Anymore than I can stop the rain
I can't watch you walk away
Fall to my knees, beg you to stay
I can't imagine, oh lucky one
How it feels now that you've won
No matter what I do
You won't see me through
Hear me out
I'm not asking for much
Just a little piece of you
My world revolves around... you
I can't reach your heart
Can't teach it how to start
I can't hold your hand
Or ever get you to understand
You said: "I don't have time for this...
We always were a hit-and-miss
Keep it up and I'll ignore you"
As they say: "What else is new?"
Hear me out
I'm really not asking for much
Just a little piece of you
My world revolves around... you
And that's what's wrong...
And that's what's wrong...
