about

On a night I was stood up, I had – in my heart of hearts – two choices: either I’m trashing my apartment or I’ll just sit right down and write a letter of pure vitriol. Thank god, my apartment remained intact and I got a poem out of it, “Last Chance”. A week or so later, Sebastien came over for one of our regular jams. We quickly came up with a lovely melody in B minor for which he insisted I find lyrics to. Knowing full well I had hundreds of poems and unfinished song lyrics filling up multiple notebooks, I randomly settled on “Last Chance”. Well, wouldn’t you know it, a song was born. All it needed was a chorus. I remembered a line I’d written as my facebook status a few weeks ago that many had “Liked”, “I’ve got a trigger-happy heart!” – sort of a play on the old “I fall in love too easily” standard. Once again, the great Rob MacDonald came in to play the fiery, angry lead guitar – both acoustic resophonic slide guitar as well as electric guitar. Interesting sidenote, we were struggling with the drums on this particular track. Who was up for the task? Who was available? Zaman and Brandon suggested their Boom Room neighbor, Erik Fines. He came in and, like an actor, I directed him. The tension and frustration and eventually anger builds and builds until it swells up and explodes. Turn it up!
