A friendship that has lasted through thick and thin, ups and downs, love and… hate? Doing the math one night, it struck me I’d been best friends with this person for ten years and I just had to write a song about it. Those first few lines are still among my favorites of anything I ever wrote: “Ten years and I’m still getting over you, an incessant buzzing in my ear that I’ve grown accustomed to”. The rhythm and beat of those words put together just feels so right. I was listening to a lot of Steely Dan when I wrote this and Kent Kataoka did a wonderful job on guitar along with Chris Lepp-Forest’s amazing drums and Sebastien’s popping bassline to convey that mood and feeling. When Montreal band The Willing’s Will Riley came in and added piano – it just sealed the deal. The song is a loving tribute to a friendship that should never have worked out – instead, not only did it work out – I can safely say he’s one of the very best friends I’ve ever had.
