Back to the Summer of 2013, out of work and feeling sorry for myself. Chat with my mom on the phone and she tells me one of my brothers said I should get out there, meet people, play with some new musicians and find my voice once and for all. The words hit me like a ton of bricks and all I want to do is lash out and say: “easy for you to say – you’ve found that light! I’m still looking for mine!” Of course, this leads me to picking up my guitar and – with only my dear Bella, my dog, as an audience – I start writing a song about how self-centered and self-pitying I’ve apparently become at this low point in my life. Well, you’ve heard of music as a form of therapy – I genuinely thank this song for helping me snap out of the dreadful funk I was in. It confirmed, along with “Don’t Stop”, that I could still write songs and surprise myself. The song was a cry for help but also a reminder to myself that we always have the power to change our own perception and feeling of things. I still love the lines “sick and tired of the game, all its lies and deceptions, can’t pretend we’re all the same, just playing to perceptions”. I’m not exactly sure if I was talking about the “yes-man’s world” of corporations and 9-to-5 jobs or the music industry or family dynamics, I just know the words felt right and lifted a weight from my shoulders. My brother was right and gave me the kick in the ass I needed. This song is dedicated to him. Oh, and how thrilled was I to have the amazing Rob MacDonald play lead guitar along with co-producer Brandon playing a gorgeous bassline and Jean-Philippe providing some gorgeous Ringo-esque drumming. And don’t get me started on Fatima’s oustanding harmonies!
