about

Summer 2013. One of my dearest, closest African friends was feeling homesick. He’d been in Canada for over a year, struggling to make ends meet, studying full-time AND working 40 to 60 hour weeks. He barely slept, didn’t eat a whole lot and yet still maintained a very positive and strong exterior. But the homesickness and fear he’d never get back to his home country was getting the best of him. Meanwhile, I was out of work for the first time in years and I felt useless and redundant. One night, with my dog Bella sitting at my feet – staring up at me as if she sensed my sadness – I sat down with my guitar and was determined to write a song of hope. This phoenix was indeed going to rise from the proverbial ashes, no matter what. The chord progression came first and then Kings of Leon’s “Wait for Me” came on CBC Radio 2. As much as I love the song, I ran to shut the radio. I had my first line: “Wait for me”. Thinking of my state of mind at the time, the words: “… while I recover from the fall” came out and I instantly felt better. That’s what this is, I thought, a fall that I will get back up from. In the studio, we kept things sparse. Julien and Sam from one of my favorite Montreal bands, Crackers & Jam, had accompanied me on this song in the past and had done so wonderfully, they were a no-brainer. Sebastien’s gorgeous bassline – so natural and emotional. Also, this is my recording reunion with my singing partner in crime for many years, Rachel Diabo. “Don’t stop believing in me…”
