“In vino veritas” they say… “in wine there is truth”. Well, that may be true, but sometimes that truth should be kept to one’s self. Indeed, “I’ve got a nasty habit of shooting my mouth off” and then it’s “all downhill from here”. A group of friends was gathered in a gorgeous Old Montreal condo and we were all drinking way too much wine. A friend of mine just kept moaning and groaning about how unfair life was and how unlucky and miserable he was. Meanwhile, in my mind, I kept thinking how good he had it and how he didn’t even need to work as money kept coming in from his parents on a weekly basis. Of course, that was all surface stuff… deep down, I think he was in a world of pain. After my third, fourth or … 12th glass of wine… I couldn’t bite my tongue any longer. I lashed out and gave him a nasty piece of my mind. The party died immediately. Luckily, I apologized and he was kind enough to forgive me but – things were never quite the same after that confrontation. Lord knows where he is now but, I hope he’s better and I hope he knows how much I truly care for him. When it came time to record this song, we all agreed we needed to keep it simple and sparse. I picked my Breedlove acoustic guitar, the amazing Brad Albetta (Martha Wainwright, Teddy Thompson) was kind enough to play his upright bass and Bashu Naïmi-Roy came in to play some gorgeous accordion, giving the song a French café feel while preserving the honest and naked feel of the lyrics. Oh, and those glasses at the end of the track may be an hommage to McCartney. Maybe. Incidentally, I’ve had a couple of people ask me about this song through the years: “Hey Max, you wrote that song about me… didn’t you?” Nope. I know who the “you” of this song is and… it’s NOT you.
