Some songs you write for yourself, to play in moments of solitude and reflection. This is one of those songs. Following the passing of my dear Bella, a 2 and half year old Boxer-Pit mix that I loved like she was my own child, I was determined to write a song to help heal the wounds and move on. Writing a song about the death of a pet without falling into sentimentality is a challenging thing but it needed to come out of my system. I heard a violin playing on this song as I wrote it. I was imagining Bella running like mad through the fields and chasing ducks at her favorite nature spot. When I met Julian Rice and his bandmates from Crackers & Jam, it seemed like a no-brainer to ask him to jam with me on this song. Well, the idea of keeping the song to myself flew right out the window the second he hit that memorable hook on the chorus. When premiering it live on June 20th, 2014th at my special birthday show, the song was an instant hit. I assembled nearly every single person who knew Bella well to come sing with me on those final choruses. My nieces, nephew, parents, friends … almost every single person I invited showed up to pay her a final tribute. The recording sends shivers up my spine and I have to give special thanks to all the musicians, choir as well as the Boom Room guys that truly captured the mood and feel perfectly.
